SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIPS

scottishathletics first held a single-race national championships in 2005.

 

The athletes who have won the championship more than once are:

4 - Jethro Lennox

3 - Scout Adkin, Catriona Buchanan, Murray Strain

2 - Tracey Brindley, Hector Haines, Tom Owens, Jasmin Paris

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The World Mountain Running Association hold World Championships and World Long Distance Championships.

 

Scots who have won senior individual medals at these championships (including World Challenge events are:

Gold - Beverly Redfern (1990), Angela Mudge (2000), Jethro Lennox (2008), Charlotte Morgan (2018).

Silver -  Colin Donnelly (1989), Tommy Murray (1995), Angela Mudge (2003), Tracey Brindley (2005), Thomas Owens (2011).

Bronze - Robbie Simpson (2011, 2015).

 

Scotland competed as one of the participating countries until 2008, winning senior team medals on several occasions. The team medallists have been:

Gold - 2003 (Angela Mudge, Tracey Brindley, Lyn Wilson); 2011 (Thomas Owens, Robbie Simpson, Jethro Lennox, Andrew Fallas, Simon Peachey).

Silver - 1995 (Tommy Murray, Robert Quinn, Colin Donnelly, Graeme Bartlett, Peter Dymoke, John Hepburn);  2005 (Tracey Brindley, Sula Young, Angela Mudge, Jill Mykura); 2013 (Claire Gordon, Helen Bonsor, Jasmin Paris, Shona Robertson).

Bronze - 1988 (Patricia Calder, Penny Rother, Joyce Salvona, Barbara Murray); 1990 (Beverly Redfern, Patricia Calder, Joyce Salvona, Jane Robertson); 1999 (Angela Mudge, Tracey Brindley, Trudi Thomson, Sonia Armitage); 2009 (Jethro Lennox, Joe Symonds, Dan Gay, David White); 2010 (Claire Gordon, Fiona Maxwell, Iona Robertson); 2011 (Fiona Maxwell, Andrea Priestley, Claire Gordon).

 

Since Great Britain & Northern Ireland has been the sole representative for the United Kingdom, the following Scottish athletes have won team medals as part of the GB&NI team:

Silver - Tom Owens (2016), Charlotte Morgan & Georgia Tindley (2018), Scout Adkin -2, Holly Page - 2, Naomi Lang (2022).

Bronze - Robbie Simpson & Andrew Douglas (2015), Helen Bonsor (2016).

WORLD CUP

The WMRA World Cup is an annual series of mountain running competitions organised by the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA). Athletes are awarded points for each performance on the tour. It started as the Alpine Grand Prix and formally became the WMRA Grand Prix in 1999. The number of races expanded to six races in 2001. In recent years, the number of races counting towards the title has varied between five and seven races. The competition took its current title World Cup in 2014.

 

The following Scots have placed in the top three:

Winners - Angela Mudge (1999, 2000, 2002), Andrew Douglas (2015, 2019)

Second - Robbie Simpson (2015), Andrew Douglas (2016), Charlotte Morgan (2021).

Third - Robert Quinn (1999), Angela Mudge (2001), Joe Symonds (2007), Andrew Douglas (2018).

 

Other top 10 placings have been achieved by:

5th - Robert Quinn (2000); 7th - Clare Miller (2001), Louise Mercer (2019), Scout Adkin (2022); 8th - Robbie Simpson (2014); 9th - Robert Quinn (2001), Robbie Simpson (213), Charlotte Morgan (2019); 10th - Jacob Adkin (10th).

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

The World Mountain Running Association held the European Trophy from 1995 to 2001 and, following recognition from the European Athletics Association, European Championships from 2002.

 

Scots who have won senior individual medals at these  events are:

Gold - Jacob Adkin (2019).

Silver -  Angela Mudge (1999, 2001, 2003), Robbie Simpson (2014).

Bronze - Robbie Simpson (2011, 2015), Scout Adkin (2022).

 

Scotland competed as one of the participating countries until 2001, and won a senior team medal in 2000. The team medallists were:

Silver - 2000 (Robert Quinn, Neil Wilkinson, Chris Robison, Alan Milligan).

The Commonwealth Mountain Running Championships were held in 2009 and 2011.  Scotland won 3 team silver medals and 1 bronze.

 

Scots who won individual medals at these  events are:

Silver -  Tracey Brindley (2011), Robbie Simpson (2011).

Bronze - Joe Symonds (2011).

 

The team medallists were:

Silver - 2009 Angela Mudge, Clare Whitehead, Sula Young, Fiona Maxwell, Susan Ridley, Claire Gordon; 2011 Tracey Brindley, Catriona Buchanan, Claire Ward, Susan Ridley, Christina Rankin; Robbie Simpson, Joe Symonds, Alasdair Anthony, Sam Hesling, Kenneth Richmond.

Bronze - 2009 Angela Mudge, Nicola Meekin, Susan Ridley, Fiona Maxwell.

 

BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS

British Mountain Running Championships were first staged by UK Athletics in 2011. Between 2014 and 2019, the men's title has been won by a Scot.

 

Scots who have won senior individual medals at these  events are:

Gold - Andrew Douglas 6 (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022), Robbie Simpson (2015), Scout Adkin 2 (2021, 2022), Jacob Adkin (2022)

Silver -  Joe Symonds (2012), Andrew Douglas (2015), Alexander Chepelin (2022), Holly Page (2022).

Bronze - Andrew Douglas (2021), Naomi Lang (2021), Kirsty Dickson (2022).

SNOWDON MOUNTAIN INTERNATIONAL

The Snowdon Race (Welsh: Ras Yr Wyddfa) is a ten-mile endurance running competition in Gwynedd, from Llanberis to the peak of Snowdon. Contestants must make the five miles up the Llanberis Path to the summit (1,085 metres or 3,560 feet above sea level) and return down. The race was first held in 1976 and incorporates an international contest.

 

Scottish winners of the race: 

Men - Colin Donnelly (1988), Neil Wilkinson (1999, 2000), Robbie Simpson (2010), Murray Strain (2012), Andrew Douglas (2019), Ross Gollan (2022). 

Women - Ros Coats (1981), Patricia Calder (1990, 1992), Angela Mudge (1998, 2000), Tracey Brindley (2002), Dawn Scott (2003), Clare Whitehead (2004), Catriona Buchanan (2010).

HOME COUNTRIES INTERNATIONAL
