The European Cup is a former team competition for European countries. It was originally known as the Europa Cup or Bruno Zauli Cup and first took place in 1965 in Stuttgart (men) and Kassel (women), Germany. It was generally held every two years until 1993, from when it took place once every year. It was replaced in 2009 by the European Team Championships.
From 1983 the event was contested on a divisional basis with promotion and relegation between the various divisions. The A, B and C Finals were retitled Super, First and Second Leagues in 1993. Each nation entered one athlete per event with points scored dependent on position (i.e. 8 points for 1st down to 1 point for 8th). The 2006 competition was contested by 9 nations.
