CALLUM HAWKINS

Born: Callum Robert Hawkins, Paisley, 22 June 1992. Club: Kilbarchan AAC. Coach: Robert Hawkins.

Brother of Derek Hawkins, Callum was a talented young athlete who won the 3000 metres at the European Youth Olympic Festival at Tampere, Finland, in 2009. He was progressing at Butler University in the United States when hit by injury, requiring two operations to correct a knee cartilage problem. He returned to the University of the West of Scotland, studying mechanical engineering, and returned to fitness and form, gaining the Commonwealth Games qualifying standard for the 10000 on his debut at the distance. His selection along with brother Derek becomes the first pair of brothers to represent Scotland at the Games since 1970. They have both gone on to be selected by Great Britain for the marathon at the 2016 Olympics.
